What kind of Healthcare system does the Philippines have?

A healthcare system is something that every country would need. Some European countries would have healthcare systems so advanced that citizens would enjoy medical benefits that are fit for a king. But what kind of healthcare system do the Philippines have?

Healthcare in the Philippines

Medical services and healthcare in the Philippines is far behind its Europen counterparts. In an overpopulated country like the Philippines, a better healthcare system is needed to be able to meet the demands of all the patients in the country.

There would be many good quality hospitals in the country, but then most would be very expensive and only the elite would be able to get treatment there. Where does that leave the masses? Some public hospitals have complete facilities that are up-to-date, but then the crowding at these public hospitals is unbelievable.

Most of the public hospitals that would have complete facilities would be located in big cities. Ambulances would carry patients from smaller towns from the surrounding area to visit these hospitals because the facilities in their town would not be enough for treatment for all patients and all disorders.

This is the cause of crowding in these public hospitals. However, many families do not have a choice, because going to a private hospital, which would have more room to house all these patients and would no doubt have the facilities to treat them would be out of the question. The expense will be just too much.

What is the problem?

Many families cannot afford quality healthcare and would have to go to a neighboring city for treatment because they would have no choice. The hospitals that would have complete facilities would be too expensive and impractical for them, so they have to make do with waiting in line at a public hospital.

Many families and individuals do not have healthcare coverage and would only rely on PhilHealth for their health-related expenses.

What is PhilHealth?

This is the government-run healthcare provider in the Philippines. It has improved over the years, and with the signing of the Universal Healthcare Act, it is set to improve even further. However, at the moment it just is not enough to cover all the medical expenses of an individual or family. Although PhilHealth would cover all Filipinos, it would only cover roughly half of the medical expenses, especially when one would require hospital confinement

How can we solve the problem?

Since we already know that there is overcrowding in public hospitals, the solution would be to seek treatment in a private hospital. We can be able to afford the costs at a private hospital by buying health insurance from a private healthcare plan provider.
